About IOELL
The The International Olympiad on English Language, Leadership & Sustainability – (IOELLS) was created to address the critical need for global sustainability and leadership skills. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, aim to eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and promote peace and prosperity for all. Achieving these goals requires a coordinated effort across all sectors of society, including government, civil society, the private sector, and individuals. Language and communication skills are essential to effectively addressing the complex challenges facing our world today. The ability to speak, listen, read, and write in English, a widely spoken language, is particularly valuable in facilitating communication and collaboration among people from different backgrounds and cultures. Additionally, leadership skills are necessary for driving change and achieving sustainable development goals. The International Olympiad on Empowerment, Language & Leadership, organized by GEIST International Foundation and Global Innovation & Leadership Center (GILC), was designed to provide a platform for young people to develop these critical skills. By centering the competition around one of the SDGs each year, the Olympiad aims to inspire and empower young people to engage with global sustainability efforts. The assessments used in the competition are designed to test participants’ language proficiency and leadership skills in the context of the chosen SDG, providing an opportunity for participants to showcase their abilities and learn from one another. The Olympiad also aims to promote cultural exchange and understanding, as participants from around the world come together to share their experiences and perspectives. By fostering these connections, the Olympiad encourages participants to become global citizens, committed to promoting sustainable development and positive social change in their communities and beyond. Overall, the International Olympiad on Empowerment, Language & Leadership is a unique opportunity for young people to develop language and leadership skills while engaging with important global issues. Through this competition, participants can gain the knowledge, skills, and connections needed to become effective leaders in their communities and beyond. IOELL started its journey back in 2019 at Hanoi, Viet Nam. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, by the participation of 25 countries, IOELL was organized virtually. The third installment of IOELL took place in Viet Nam in 2023.
