International Olympiad on English Language, Leadership & Sustainability (IOELLS)

The International Olympiad on English Language, Leadership & Sustainability (IOELLS) was established to address the growing need for English language proficiency, leadership skills, and global sustainability awareness among young people. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, which aim to eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and promote peace and prosperity for all.

Achieving these goals requires coordinated efforts across all sectors of society, including governments, civil society, the private sector, and individuals. Effective language and communication skills are essential for addressing today’s complex global challenges, fostering collaboration, and building mutual understanding among people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. English, as a widely used international language, plays a significant role in facilitating these connections. Similarly, leadership skills empower young people to take initiative, inspire others, and contribute to meaningful change and sustainable development.

Organized by GEIST International Foundation and the Global Innovation & Leadership Center (GILC), IOELLS provides an international platform for young people to develop and demonstrate their language proficiency, leadership abilities, critical thinking, creativity, and sustainability awareness. Each year, the Olympiad places emphasis on selected global sustainability themes, encouraging participants to explore the Sustainable Development Goals and develop innovative ideas and solutions to real-world challenges.

Through a variety of assessments and competitive activities, participants have opportunities to showcase their abilities, exchange ideas, learn from their peers, and strengthen their communication and leadership skills. The Olympiad also promotes intercultural understanding and international collaboration by bringing together young people from different countries and cultural backgrounds. Through these experiences, IOELLS encourages participants to become responsible global citizens committed to sustainable development and positive social change in their communities and beyond.

The journey of IOELLS began in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2019. In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Olympiad was held virtually, with participation from 25 countries. The third edition took place in Vietnam in 2023, followed by the fourth edition in Malaysia in 2024. In 2025, the international program was successfully held at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. The 2026 edition was subsequently completed in Bali, Indonesia.

Building on these achievements, IOELLS 2027 is scheduled to take place in Hanoi, Vietnam, bringing together young learners to celebrate language, leadership, cultural exchange, and sustainability. Through its continuing international journey, IOELLS remains committed to empowering the next generation with the knowledge, skills, and global perspectives needed to become effective leaders and contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive future.
